Program Note
Delhi is a complex city, comprised of people and languages from various levels of society, yet it manages to balance the importance of the present and the traditional past. The monsoon season has a special significance in these diverse people′s lives. By depicting the wedding ceremony of an upper class family, the Vermas, Mira Nair presents an optimistic outlook on the significance of family and love, which transcends social rank, language and age. Each of the Verma family members has a consternation of their own before the wedding. Aditi is concerned with someone else he is in love with, while cousin Ria painfully recollects being raped by her uncle, Puri. Dubey, a middle-aged and middle class man in charge of wedding decorations, falls in love with a housemaid of the Vermas, Alice. Despite this emotional entanglement and the uncertainties of love, a timely and wise decision by the father, Lalit, together with the understanding of the family, turns the wedding into an exciting festival, washing away the troubled thoughts and emotions. The dancing and music presented in this film is very different to the typical Bollywood films. Just as the monsoon provides common good sense and sentiments to the people of India, the family-centered ideals of Monsoon Wedding portray optimism. (KIM Ji-Seok)
