Program Note
Go suggests a new perspective on the Korean-Japanese issue. In the words of the writer of the original story, Kazuki Kaneshiro, Go is not about national identity but about a young man and his agony. Following his father′s wishes, Korean-Japanese Sukihara attended a junior high school for Korean immigrants, but now goes to a Japanese high school. Using the boxing skills that he learned from his father, Sukihara becomes the cock of the walk at school. He falls in love with Sakurai, but when she finds out that he is Korean-Japanese, she parts with him. A few months later, they reunite. To Sukihara, the nationality issue is not the single most important problem in his life. Just as any other young man of his age, he has many and various problems, of which the nationality issue is only one. Isao Yukisada nicely portrays the life of this rebellious yet optimistic young man. While Kazuki Kaneshiro, in his original novel, depicts the main character more as an outsider, director Yukisada′s character is depicted as merely an eccentric Japanese. Although Sukihara often is subjected to prejudice as a Korean, he is nevertheless Japanese. Perhaps this is the method the director has found to deal with and try to eliminate such prejudice.
