Program Note
This is the second film of Isao Yukisada, who used to work as Shunji lwai′s assistant director. The delicate psychological articulations and the protagonist′s realization of love, a moment too late, resembles lwai′s Love Letter, but Yukisada takes this one step further. Teruaki, who comes from a fishing village, is now living alone in Tokyo. One day he discovers the name of an elemetary schoolmate, Tomomi, in the list of victims killed in a fishing boat accident. He attends her funeral with other classmates and recalls their memories of her. He realizes that she was his first love. Late that night, Tomomi appears to him and takes him to a hill where sunflowers are in full bloom. Yukisada points out how vulnerable humans can be, and moreover how childhood heartaches fragments of each schoolmates′ memory of Tomomi. As if the filmmaker is saying that there is not one single moment that is not precious in life and the problem is that people tend to forget this too easily. (Kim Ji-Seok)
