Program Note
Everyone desires to change his or her reality. Director Vivian Chang presents such desire from a woman′s point-of-view in this film made up of three different episodes: a five year-old girl who begs in the street with her physically disabled father dreams of seeing her arguing parents joyfully dancing hand in hand; a seventeen year old who has stopped communicating with her mother dreams of escaping her reality by using someone else′s ID; and a thirty-year-old woman, having an affair with a married man, attempts reconciliation with her estranged mother. Their dreams and desires for change stem from their unstable relationships with their mothers, and moreover represent a desire to repair such relationships. Each in her own way long for maternal love, the most infinite means that constitute a mother and daughter relationship. If both the younger girls′ dreams are properties of their own, the woman′s is a relative one that makes human exchange possible. Thereby, the last scene, where the woman bathes with a child is the most manifest evidence of Vivian Chang′s goal of expressing hope through ′maternal love.′ (Kim Ji-Seok)
