Program Note
Eun-Suk wants to make a documentary film based on romances of everyday people through a series of interviews with passers-by. He attempts an interview with beauty parlor girl Young-Hee, who in turn tells him about her boyfriend now serving in the military. Eun-Suk decides to capture their meeting at the military post; however Young-Hee disappears without any notice, cutting all ties in the process. The same story is re-told in Paris, France of the previous year, from the very first meeting of then-film student Eun-Suk and Young-Hee, a ballerina at the time. At this juncture, their interview from Seoul requires a brand new interpretation, as the viewers begin to wonder how much of her story is truly believable. Since the invention of cinema, the very first formal division was probably between the documentary form and the fictional form. Few questioned the difference between the two domains then with their distinctive boundaries. Since the era of Louis Feuillade, however, the signs of breaking up such boundaries began showing and with the works of Godard and Kiarostami that process kicked into high gear. Byun is no exception in constructing Interview based on this tradition. With box-office draws such as Lee Jun-Jae and Shim Eun-Ha , this ′documentary film′ is produced within the realm of the mainstream film industary, this resulting in further clashes between the boundaries. In the end, the director throws fresh perspective on the nature of true fiction and mock documentary(Han Sang-Jun)
