Program Note
"Die Bad isn’t just an ordinary omnibus-style film. The 1st part Rumble has action; horror conventions dominate Nightmare, the 2nd part; the 3rd part Our Contemporarie is a mock-documentary; and the gangster genre is applied to the 4th part, Die Bad. All these stories are connected to one another even with changes in generation and characters. This is possible because I′m from the post-Tarantino generation. And this film contains all my favorite genres except for the comedy." As in the words of director Ryoo Seung-Wan, four individual shorts are interwoven to make up one feature length film. Such organization results in a unique low-budget feature with distinctive disproportionate styles. Black & white and color scenes are jumbled up together, as well as the elements of action and horror genres. Ryoo’s film draws frequent comparisons to Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs; the director himself confesses to being influenced by Tarantino′s works, as much as John Woo’s or Jackie Chan’s, if not more. From Tarantino’s films, Ryoo found it possible to fill the film sequences with outrageous dialogue. And the result is a cinema of "do as one pleases,"with the film’s angry and violent motives providing its coherent nature. (Han Sang-Jun)
