Program Note
In 1979, when the Republic of Kazakhstan was still a part of the Soviet Union, suppressed rage and the loneliness fill Almaty. On the last day of classes, three high school students - a Russian Valera, a Jew Jacob, and a Kazakh Karim - steal an electric guitar set because of drinking and angst. Valera is arrested because of a call of from his stepfather, and Jacob and Karim kill Valera′s stepfather as they try to avenge their friend. Finally, Valera dies and Jacob is arrested. The spring break is over. On the first day of classes, Karim participates in the school parade singing a patriotic song about the Soviet Army. What director Karakulov tries to tell is the hazy history of Kazakhstan. The savage stepfather who drives Valera to death symbolizes Russia as the absolute authority exploiting Kazakhstan for hundreds of years. And Jacob and his gloomy family show the Jewish history of oppression and discrimination, and Karim singing the Soviet Army song concealing anger and fear, is a metaphor for the political situation Kazakhs were in then. One of the best Kazakh Nouvelle-Vague films. (Yu Hyun-Mi)
