Program Note
Blackboards deals with educators in search of students in the hinterland of war-ravaged region. It also deals with weary lives of Kurds, a minority group alienated by the Iranian society. Near the border of Iran and Iraq, there are groups of teachers seeking students while carrying blackboards on their backs. Among them are Reeboir, who meets young boys carrying heavy loads, and Said, who meets a group of elders taking a shelter out of the danger zone. Reeboir attempts to offer some education to those kids, yet they shun his effort by being cautious. While attempting to cross the border, many kids transporting load of materials get shot and killed while the elders go thru extreme difficulties before they finally cross the border. As was the case in her debut work, The Apple, Samira points out the needs for education of offering ′love.′ In addition, the blackboard serves as a shield to flying bullets and as a splint for the injured ones. There aren′t many films in history, in which the blackboard is embossed with such intense image and symbolization. (Kim Ji-Seok)
