Program Note
The Apple brought worldwide fame to Samira Makhmalbaf, who was just 18 year-old when she directed this film. Shooting began when she saw a television broadcast about a 65 year-old man who raised his twin daughters locked inside the house for 12 years before getting arrested. Samira took the initiative and began capturing the family on camera. She didn′t see him as the malicious person portrayed in the media. Instead, she paid attention to what he had to say. He had a wife who is blind and worried about his daughters getting stranded. He had no choice but to lock them up when he went to work. Samira began capturing the everyday lives of this family during her 11-day stay with them. Even after he was released from jail, the old man kept locking his daughters in the house. Unable to stand by, welfare staff eventually freed them to play outside, while locking him in the house to let him experience the pains his daughters have suffered through. Samira intercuts the images of two daughters, Zahra and Masume, playing outside along with their friends with images of old man locked up, who eventually changes his mind. (Kim Ji-Seok)
