Program Note
In ancient times it was forbidden for people to freely demonstrate their love and happiness. One could not express these emotions because to do so would excite the envy and anger of the gods, who considered happiness their exclusive privilege. They would punish daring people who sought the same. This film is about Sonya and Andre, two people who were not afraid to love each other despite very complicated circumstances. The film takes place in Moscow 1983, when the country was actively involved in an effort to strengthen work ethics and at the same time persecuted viewing of foreign "vicious” films on video. Sonya, an editor at a Central TV Station, has a teenage son and her husband is a successful writer. And Andre, a journalist from France, has also a family in Paris. But their meeting forced Sonya, this rather chaste woman and faithful wife to leave her family nest. Sonya and Andre get to know a taste of happiness. The gods, however, did not stay indifferent.
