Program Note
Portugal, 1974: There is increasing civilian unrest against the oppression induced by the Fascist regime. Any critical voice against the Salazar government is instantly silenced by brutality and imprisonment. University professor Antonia worries over the recent disappearance of one of her militant students and decides to speak out, thus endangering her life. And when Antonia discovers the atrocities in which her husband Manuel participated in war, their relationship is permanently wounded. Emotionally tortured by his bloody military past and seeking redemption, Manuel takes action against the system that almost ruined him. Captain Maia, no longer tolerating his country′s military violence in its African colonies, tells his regiment of young soldiers that sometimes the only solution is to disobey. April 24: Manuel leads the takeover of a major radio station as, that night, a carefully planned military coup of the revolutionary AFM (Armed Forces Movement) begins. Early morning, April 25: Captain Maia′s mutineering troops arrive at the foot of the President′s palace.
