Program Note
Living with ′ex-comfort women′ for seven years, shooting this film, is not an easy task. But giving personal accounts of the forced rape that was carried out in the name of ′comfort′, that is an extremely difficult task. Reflecting on the mad history that is tattooed onto women′s bodies and recognizing it as a war-crime is the easiest part of all. That is the role designed for the audience. My Own Breathing is the last chapter of director Byun Young-Joo′s ′comfort women′ trilogy. The first film, The Murmuring(1995), calls for the forgotten voices of ex-comfort women and the healing of their internalized self-hatred. Habitual Sadness(1997) presents a turning point in these women′s ideology; moving from healing to hope for the future, and from self-hatred to self-respect. My Own Breathing champions the courage of women searching for their identities, as former victims interview one another to gather statements in their own words. The film is a bitter requiem, hoping that such breathing will remain alive and protect not only former comfort women but also current victims of suppression and domination. But the message presented by The Murmuring trilogy is clear; when a subordinated group known as colonized women begin disclosing crime, the colonizers must bear the responsibility of recognizing and compensating for its acts. Because truths are held within the subordinated, in their voices. or in their murmurs. (Kim Sun-A)
