Program Note
Grandmother is only able to take her daughter, leaving her three sons in the North, on her escape to South Korea during the Korean War. Her lifelong wish is to see her sons again on the day of unification. However, she is getting older and, to make things worse, is not feeling well. She eases herself by listening to her second son′s voice on tape and by reading letters from her sons. While the tragic history of the partitioned country has continued endlessly, the family itself is divided as well. Grandmother keeps sighing as she looks at the North whereas her daughter cannot tell about her son′s death for fear of shocking her mother. Her grandchildren cannot communicate with their granny who is filled with the longing for their uncles whom they never met. Grandmother is a visual essay of the director′s own relative, beginning with images of her at the hospital and ending with her returning home. The camera attempts to record her story in a calm manner, yet its presence seems to bother her at first; consequently, the people surrounding her end up speaking for her instead of herself. This documentary calls attention to the unresolved Cold War conflict while simultaneously bringing up the ongoing debate on documentary films, on the camera′s method of capturing reality and its relationship to the subject.
