Program Note
The notion that ′being′ only begins at the moment when it is endangered by ′not being,′ is illustrated at the beginning of the film by a Korean legend, and then by a story from the early 20th century. Yan, a teacher, kills Caj′s daughter and flees. Caj sets out to find the murderer, but the powers of heaven and nature prevent him from having his vengeance. In order to fulfil the age-old law of "a life for a life", he begets a son, Sungu, and bequeaths upon him the duty of seeing justice done. This young man with the soul of a poet then wanders about in faraway places, hardly able to bear the burden of his commitment, which is corroding his talent and his soul. Far from his birthplace he meets an old woman who has given herself up to Yan in order to absorb the evil he had perpetrated, and to atone for it. Her self sacrifice and Yan′s later death in a fire give back to Sungu the strength to live, work and love. He is a free being at last. (production notes)

In 1984, 10 young filmmakers from Kazakhstan participated in a VGIK (All-Soviet State Cinematography Institute) workshop under the leadership of Sergei Soloviev. After they graduated, these filmmakers began to make new films that rejected the current ′authenticity′ method of filmmaking in Kazakhstan. Ermek Shinarbayev, along with Ardak Amirkulov, Bakhit Karakulov, and Serik Aprimov became the few filmmakers to lead the new wave in Kazakhstan cinema. Born in Almata in 1953, he majored in cinematography at the VGIK. He made his first short The Beauty in Morning in 1982. This film, which portrayed the psychological journey a nomad woman goes through after she loses her husband at a young age, raised fierce controversy within the arena of criticism. In 1985, he began his partnership with Anatoly Kim of Koryo descent with whom he has created a series of masterpieces. Shinarbayev′s 1985 film My Sister Lucie and his 1987 film Out of Forest and into the Glade, both based on Anatoly Kim′s film scripts, have received critical acclaim. His 1989 film The Revenge was also made with the collaboration of Anatoly Kim. This film, which portrays the tragic history of immigration, received an invitation to the 1991 Cannes International Film Festival in the ′Un Certain Regard′ section and became the most intemationally acclaimed film from Kazakhstan. He is currently working on a documentary project.(Kim Ji-Seok)
