Despite their feelings, people often suppress their sexual orientation, either due to their own unawareness or due to the moral values of the society they live in. Men and Women argues for the liberation of social oppression against the basic instincts of humans. Xiao Bo, a country boy new to Beijing, stays at a friend Qing Jie′s place and helps her with her clothes shop. One day Qing Jie introduces her best friend Ah Meng to Xiao Bo, but Xiao Bo takes no interest in her. One day when Qing Jie is out, her husband Da Kang attempts to rape Xiao Bo. Xiao Bo leaves their home in anger goes to hometown friend Chong Chong′s house, eventually developing a relationship that is more than just friendly. Meanwhile, Qing Jie too deepens her relationship with Ah Meng, for whom she eventually leaves her husband. Liu Bing Jian tells this tale of instinctual desire among the people of Bejing in two ways. If revealing the homosexual orientation of Xiao Bo and Qing Jie is one, exposing a bathroom culture where the desire for excretion is fulfilled is another. Sexual desire and the desire of excretion are interrelated. Moreover Liu Bing Jian seems to be saying that the ambiguity of the division of sexual roles between man and woman will become more pervasive in the future and this in turn will generate a new way of living. He also implies that this is the new reality of Beijing, where everthing may look conservatively driven, yet all is secretly changing on the inside. (Kim Ji-Seok)
