Program Note
Korean cinema of the late 1990′s often transposes our uncertain present into the past, seeking to discover its link to our everyday life. Based on a novel by Choi In-Ho, Black Hole also stares back into the past, attempting to fill the gaps in our superficial reality. A surgeon ′l′ awakes in a strange place with large gaps in his memory. The only clue he has is a voice recording of a former patient/lover Sun-Young, who reveals disturbing accounts of his conduct during their torrid affair. Her words slowly bring back the past, only to reveal the truth as nothing but a dream. Unfortunately, his efforts to remember only result in his further sinking into a deep hole. Incorporating the dual narration of ′l′ and Sun-Young, Black Hole engages a complex plot structure, slowly incorporating the present day with past memories. Kim Kuk-Hyung′s intentionally excessive pature in this film reminds us of melodramas from the 60′s and 70′s. This, in addition to the "in- Vour-face" narrative delivered by camera-addressing characters, sets him apart from his contemporaries as a unique artisan of dialogue. Black Hole penetrates the surface of reality′s tedious and closed nature, while offering a way to escape our daily life and avoid sliding into the vast hole of our nihilistic existence.
