Program Note
Director Sven Bresser′s debut film, Reedland, is a mystery drama that follows the journey of an old man exploring evil after a murder occurs in his small rural village. Johan, a master reed cutter, discovers the body of a young girl on his land one day and is overcome by an inexplicable emotion. His search for the culprit, which begins out of a desire to protect his granddaughter or perhaps from a sense of guilt, gradually turns into an obsession, filling the closed-off community with an unseen tension. Reedland, which explores the evil hidden in a quiet village, cleverly utilizes the imagery of reeds as its title suggests. The reed bed, which conceals everything like a maze, is the perfect place to hide crime, ugliness, fear, and even the truth. As an eerie atmosphere continues, as if the reeds are whispering in the wind, the restrained performance of Gerrit Knobbe in the role of Johan dominates the entire film. Layered on top of its powerful subject matter and absorbing structure is an impressive poetic rhythm reminiscent of directors like Ingmar Bergman, Michael Haneke, and Thomas Vinterberg.
