Program Note
Singapore, the cleanest and safest country in the world. Choo, a sixteen-year old girl, cannot stand this version of Singapore. What must it feel like to live in a country where caning still exists and even chewing gum on the street is illegal? When we view Singapore as a giant aquarium through the allegory of premodern violence occurring at school, it expands into state violence. Choo is the only one who rebels against the school policy. Inspired by her courageous actions, her friends agree to form an organization modeled after The Triads. However, their clumsy plan is soon discovered by the school administration, and to avoid punishment, they must perform well on their final exams. In the examination room, her friends give patriotic, model answers. But what answer will Choo give? (KIM Chae-hee)
