Program Note
Entering his twilight years, a man wishes to reflect on his life, reconcile with the past, and reconnect with his children. This conventional narrative arc takes on greater complexity when the man in question is the president of Italy. As his term draws to a close, will he choose to maintain the status quo as always or make a choice that will reshape both his personal life and political legacy? Reuniting with the legendary Toni Servillo in the lead role, Paolo Sorrentino rekindles the sharp, satirical critique of power and authority that defined Il Divo (2008). Between ambition and respect for the system, even those at the height of power ultimately face doubt, unease, and the all-too-human suffering of aging and illness. Servillo breathes life into the film with his rich performance oscillating between comedy and tragedy, while Sorrentino completes this political opera with his signature Baroque mise-en-scene and the ornate visual grandeur of an Italian palace.
