Program Note
A new film from the Dardenne brothers, who have never stopped walking towards hope, The Young Mother′s Home tells the story of five teenage single mothers living together in a shelter. Ariane, heavily pregnant, searches for the mother who abandoned her. Perla believes her baby will be the link that keeps her boyfriend from leaving. Jessica, after long deliberation, decides to put her baby up for adoption, but is thrown into turmoil when her own neglectful mother appears to oppose it. None of the stories of the young mothers at the shelter are easy, but the camera does not treat them with careless pity. Instead, it focuses on how these young mothers, who still need protection themselves, fight in their own ways to break the inheritance of misfortune and change their lives. They are social victims, yet refuse to remain victims, and their actions can be called the summation of the Dardenne brothers′ way of confronting the world through choice and responsibility. This film is the winner of the Best Screenplay award at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. (SONG Kyung-won)
