Program Note
While struggling with writing his memoir, author Marcel Pagnol is suddenly visited by a ghostly vision of his younger self. True to its original French title, Marcel et Monsieur Pagnol, the film splits the legendary writer into two selves—childhood and old age—crafting a richly layered biographical portrait. Young Marcel Pagnol acts as the film’s guide, gathering the most memorable moments from his life. From his childhood in his hometown of Marseille to his creative prime as a novelist, playwright, and filmmaker, the film unfolds Marcel Pagnol’s life in chronological order. It also thoughtfully examines how the early loss of family members left a lasting imprint on Pagnol’s body of work. As in The Triplets of Belleville (2003) and The Illusionist (2010), director Sylvain Chomet devotes meticulous attention to the fluid and expressive gestures, as well as the facial nuances, of his animated characters. His reverence and affection for Marcel Pagnol imbues the film with a gentle warmth. (CHO Hyunna)

Sylvain CHOMET
After studying at the École Européenne Supérieure de l’Image (EESI) in Angoulême and Poitiers, Sylvain Chomet made his debut as a comic artist before turning to animation filmmaking. He wrote and directed the short film The Old Lady and the Pigeons (1997), which won numerous awards, including the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Short and the Grand Prix at the Annecy International Animation Festival. His first feature-length animation, The Triplets of Belleville (2003), received worldwide acclaim and was nominated at major awards ceremonies such as the César Awards and the Academy Awards. In 2010, he directed The Illusionist (2010), based on an unfinished script by Jacques Tati, which garnered honors from the European Film Awards, the César Awards, and the New York Film Critics Circle, among others. Beyond animation, he also directed the live-action feature Attila Marcel (2013). Chomet’s works are characterized by their embrace of classical French culture, music, and humor, as well as by his unique portrayal of delicate emotions and small moments of everyday life. His animations, blending retro-styled mise-en-scène with lyrical storytelling, have won the affection of audiences worldwide.
