Program Note
Man-su (Lee Byung Hun), the protagonist of No Other Choice, leads a happy life. He has a stable job, a beautiful wife named Miri (Son Yejin), and a peaceful family. That is, until the day he is laid off. From that moment, his life begins to unravel. The job hunt proves grueling, his confidence plummets, and hardship steadily closes in. Seeking work as a paper manufacturing specialist, Man-su realizes that his competitors are far more skilled than he is—and he decides to handle this situation in an outrageous way. No Other Choice is a high-caliber film born from a remarkable collaboration of leading talents in contemporary Korean cinema. With Park Chan-wook’s masterful direction, the script, cinematography, art direction, costume design, and music each retain their singularity while blending seamlessly into a unified whole. The stellar cast—Son Yejin, Park Hee Soon, Lee Sung Min, Yeom Hye Ran, and Cha Seung Won—deliver outstanding performances. In particular, Lee Byung Hun portrays Man-su with a pathetic tension, depicting a desperate yet extremely clumsy man whose gestures and expressions evoke both sadness and humor, drawing the audience into his predicament with mixed emotions. In No Other Choice, uncontrollable events, emotions, and situations collide without warning, tumbling about chaotically. From start to finish, the film captures the pitiful frenzied outbursts of an ordinary man with a persistent grip on the viewers’ attention. (JUNG Hanseok)
