Program Note
Beginning with the caption that a box of memory cards, snippets of articles, and dried flowers was found on a shelf at a university in India, A Night of Knowing Nothing is a bold documentary that uses the concept of found footage as its own aesthetic methodology. The box also contains a letter written by a film student to her faraway lover. As the letter is read over black-and-white footage, the dreams, aspirations, memories, and fantasies of Indian youths collide with the bitter reality, in this dream-like film. This is a story about love and revolution. Although both love and revolution have failed, youthful hearts are still pounding with fervent aspirations. A documentary of a new generation that presents a historical and political narrative with a creative and artistic vision, this film was invited to the Cannes Film Festival’s Director′s Fortnight section and won the L′Œil d′or (Golden Eye) for best documentary.
