Flee generated a lot of buzz and topped the documentary prize at Sundance this year. Director Jonas Poher Rasmussen met the protagonist Amin as a teenager, but did not know the truth behind the boy’s flight from Afghanistan until many years later. Amin’s harrowing story of escape from his hometown to Russia to arrive finally in Denmark all alone, is portrayed with beautiful hand-drawn animation and archival footage. It is a heartfelt story of endurance and acceptance, and after decades of buried pain and denial in fear, the protagonist finally opens up to unburden and embrace himself. The unforgettable club scene highlights the moment where Amin has finally reached his ′home′. If you are a fan of Waltz with Bashir (2008), or if you believe in the therapeutic power of cinema, or if you have ever longed for someone to spill your secrets, this is a film that should not be missed.
