Program Note
What was life like in a communist collective farm during World War II? Sughra’s Sons is a film about a historical tragedy that took place in a small village. The head of the farm is a man with unchecked power who decides on rations for the villagers, and the poor villagers have to walk on eggshells around him. His power leads to sexual assault. Unable to tell anyone, the victim ends up killing herself. Sughra, who had to endure the village chief’s lecherous glances, had two sons. When her older son receives a draft notice, she sends him to the partisans in the mountains. The film progresses from the perspective of her younger son. Terrifying images of the world seen through a child’s eyes are plainly captured in black and white. This is the latest work of Armenian-born Azerbaijani director Ilgar Najaf, who directed Buta (2011) and Pomegranate Orchard (2017). (NAM Dong-chul)
