Program Note
Tolik, a bread delivery man, lives with his pregnant wife Altynai, his two daughters– Saule who is about to enter college and her younger sister— and a somewhat selfish father. The family is already drowning in debt. Meanwhile, Saule becomes pregnant, and Tolik and Altynai are insulted by her boyfriend′s parents. Tolik goes to complain to his only friend, Baur, but Baur collapses from a heart attack while dancing. Director Aizhana Kassymbek, who visited Busan in 2018 with her short Air, completed her first feature Fire, following two shorts Water (2018) and Air. Fire depicts the hardships of a family driven to extreme conditions in a city with prices of goods that are much too high for ordinary workers’ survival, but this film is never overwhelmed by external factors. As if saying that life cannot be a series of pains, humorous music and scenes are placed throughout the film. In particular, you must not miss the ending—this scene alone is reason enough to watch this film. (PARK Sun Young)
