Tengiz marries Madiyar, an only child, and is forced to conceive within a month of their marriage. At her mother-in-law’s insistence, she hops on a train to go to the hospital and visit her parents along the way. There she learns that the train vendor Anargul and Madiyar may be having an affair. After her trip, Tengiz becomes pregnant, and Madiyar promises to meet her at the train station to go to the hospital together. When Tengiz sees Madiyar with Anargul at the train station, she tries to hop on the running train but ends up in an accident. Not only does she miscarry but also her right arm and leg are amputated. Tengiz shows how people living in the margins, such as a divorced woman and a woman with disabilities, overcome prejudice and rise as dignified beings in the patriarchal and conservative Uzbekistan.
