Program Note
Just before the outbreak of the Pacific War, Yusaku, a merchant from Kobe, goes on a business trip to Manchuria and witnesses a barbarous act, which he decides to bring to light. Afraid that Yusaku’s secret would threaten their perfect family, his wife Satoko tries to stop him but ultimately joins his cause and becomes the “wife of a spy.” Master filmmaker Kurosawa Kiyoshi presents a suspenseful thriller of the entangled passion and beliefs of three people, enshrouded in uncertainty and unrest that permeated Japan in 1940. Co-written by Kurosawa, Hamaguchi Ryusuke, and Nohara Tadashi, and featuring a star-studded cast, including Aoi Yu, Takahashi Issei, and Higashide Masahiro, the film is a theatrical version of NHK’s special TV drama broadcast in June 2020.
