As a party starts, so does a long night full of injustice, humiliation and misogyny for Mariam. After she experiences sexual violence, she begins a battle against the authoritative bureaucrats who turn a blind eye to her distress in order to recover her dignity for herself. This film is one of the most anticipated films from North Africa this year and deals with the issue of female discrimination in an experimental manner. At the beginning of the film, the female protagonist looks straight back at the audience in a club bathroom as she fixes her makeup and glitzy mini dress, which is shot in a long take with a camera placed in the position of the mirror. This might look provocative in a conservative society. The director casts a question in this way and tells the story about the protagonist’s cruel night. After she is sexually harassed by a police officer, she seeks help with no protection under the law, which suggests the unfair and unjust life of Tunisian women. This is the latest work of Kaouther Ben Hania, who drew attention with the mockumentary Challat of Tunis, screened at the previous Busan International Film Festival. (RHEE Souewon)
