Program Note
When Jessy gets pregnant, her partner David begins to panic. After having been beaten up on a train one day in front of Jessy, David turns to intense workouts and steroids. He overcomes his fears, but his aggressive behavior becomes a threat to Jessy and the unborn baby. Goliath shows how far a man will go under pressure to protect his woman. It is chilling to see how David turns into Goliath, driven by the urge to be a strong man and a responsible father to his unborn baby. The film shows the universal anxiety of men rooted in the pressure to be a strong man, and the troubles of a young couple about to experience a rapid change with an unexpected pregnancy. This film, following a series of films with similar stories, seems to reflect the social reality in Switzerland today. It delivers a distinguished portrayal of the unprepared young who are about to be parents from the perspective of “Goliath Syndrome”. The excellent performance of Sven Schelker, in the role of David, shouldn’t be missed. (RHEE Souewon)
