Program Note
Mathilde, not quite a teenager yet, looks after her mentally unstable mother, but separation is an everpresent threat. The complicated and touching relationship between a nine-year old and her mother unfolds as a strong mise-en-scène. Noémie Lvovsky, star and director of Camille Rewinds, dedicated this fairy tale-like work dealing with the strong mother-daughter bond to her own mother. As not only magic and wonder but also danger and darkness are contained in fairy tales, the girl’s daily life is not always bright either. Amazing, though, is the way the child leads her own life with imagination and potential. Her only friend and companion, speaking owl given to her by her mother, and the scenes with a girl underwater symbolize the strength of children. The owl as a mother’s gift to her daughter stands in for the director’s affection for the mother. The last shot, symbolizing earnest, heart-felt support to Mathilde, will move the viewer with explosive force. (RHEE Souewon)
