The subject matter of this sports film is wrestling. The storyline follows a familiar arc in that the main character overcomes obstacles and poor circumstances to arrive at the top of their game. However, the fact that the setting is India and the wrestler is female is what sets this film apart. Wrestling fanatic Mahavir wants to have a son and wants that son to be a wrestler. However, when he has three daughters in a row his frustration is beyond words. One day, his first and second daughters beat up a boy. Eureka! Mahavir gets his daughters to receive intensive training. Based on a true story, the film develops the story with classical proportion. In the first half, the two girls become wrestlers, breaking the stereotype of the Indian female. The second half depicts their conflicts with Mahavir, the training methods of the coach, and the selection of the first daughter for the varsity team. Aamir Khan, India’s leading national actor, attracted much attention by gaining 28kg for the role of Mahavir and taking on his first elderly role. In casting for the roles of the two wrestling daughters, the director had to audition three thousand actresses. (HER Namwoong)
