Program Note
A Journey Through French Cinema is master director Bertrand Tavernier’s love letter to French Cinema, showing him to be not just a filmmaker but a passionate cinephile. Tavernier takes as model My Voyage to Italy (2002) of Martin Scorsese, another famous cinephile. It is, as the title suggests, a journey into French Cinema and features edited footage and interviews about several directors who brought greatness to the French cinema, from Jacques Becker to Claude Sautet. Tavernier’s own comments on the video footage and his selection of images offer yet more unusual audiovisual enjoyment. A Journey through French Cinema is carefully crafted documentary that includes Tavernier’s personal experiences, from working as assistant director to Jean-Pierre Melville to serving as press agent for Jean-Luc Godard, and even his interviewing of Jean Renoir. With its many behind-the-scene episodes and references to legendary filmmakers and actors, the film is a must-see documentary for cinephiles, especially French film fans. (RHEE Souewon)
