Program Note
The Other Side explores individuals who exist somewhere between a state of illegality and anarchy: a couple trying to get free of drug abuse, young people desperate for work, old people now abandoned, ex-special forces soldiers who act like they are still in the military, and even a young mother—all people on the edge, struggling alone just to survive in the southern state of Louisiana. The camera exposes what these people face, the ignorance of society toward them and their loss of citizen′s rights. Living in a trailer, Mark and Lisa are a difficult couple to fathom and hard for Korean viewers to watch perhaps, but the director′s warmhearted and open view gives their everyday life a poetic and lyrical overtone. A proposal shows love has no boundaries, and though these outsiders may not fit within an accepted social framework, they are still part of humankind. Italian documentary director, Roberto Minervini, exposes some dark truths about an unseen side of modern American society, suggesting, “individualism and mistrust in the United States Government have reached a boiling point in America.” (RHEE Soue-won)
