Program Note
June 1940, German troops march into Paris. Jacques Jaujard, the deputy head of the Louvre museum during World War Ⅱ known as 'the man who saved Mona Lisa' from Nazi, and Count Franziskus Wolff Metternich worked together to protect and preserve the treasure of the Louvre Museum. Russian master Alexander Sokurov tells their story as well as the other tales from men of power and their relation to art including Napoleon Bonaparte. In juxtaposion with Sokurov's own process of making the documentary and fictional reconstruction of the characters, Francofonia magically explores the relationship between art and power, and asks what art tells us about ourselves, at the very heart of one of the most devastating conflicts the world has ever known. First appeard at the competition section of the Venice Film Festival in 2015.
