Program Note
Eric lives with his father, barely making ends meet by doing chores for a rich Maria’s family. Maria suggests that Eric and his father should enjoy the Christmas holidays at her family’s vacation home. They reluctantly accept her invitation, and Eric has a great time with boys his age. However, the two families’ class differences lead to an inevitable conflict between them. This first feature by Franco Lolli, presented in Critics’ Week at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, represents the emerging power of young Colombian filmmakers. The title means “the well - off” in Spanish and this film juxtaposes the world of the rich and that of the little boy. Moreover, it looks at the boy that has been invited to this new world from a very objective point of view and vividly illustrates the boy’s inner conflict and anger, both rooted in poverty, psychological growing pains and inequality. Watching Eric and his father walk down the dark street after Maria’s home is heart-wrenching. (JinPARK)
