Program Note
A documentary exploring the international rise of the Taiwanese New Wave represented by the likes of Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Edward Yang and its impact on world cinema. The film weaves interviews with cinema professionals who took the initiative in introducing this film movement with leading filmmakers from all parts of the world such as Kurosawa Kiyoshi, Jia Zhangke and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. While the former interviews serve as excellent teaching material the latter work as personal and intimate accounts of the film movement. It also presents itself as an ardent arena of debate on film criticism (such as the meaning and context of what is “modern” for example). Likewise, the narration-free interviews, globe-spanning locations and footage selections capture the interplay between emotion and society and individual and reality. The footage visualizes the simultaneously analytical and intimate, local yet geography-crossing sensibility of the Taiwanese New Wave aesthetics. With the exception of the epilogue, the absence of the filmmakers of this movement enables the film to cleverly touch upon a subtle sense of loss while avoiding the cliches of auteur theory.
