Program Note
A scholar reads calmly while sitting in front of a bookshelf filled with books. It is Gayatri Spivak, the godmother of post-colonialism, who gently yet firmly speaks of how women became involved in the liberation from European colonialism. This ‘introduction’ by the world-renowned scholar is followed by interviews with female soldiers who fought for the liberation of Mozambique. The interview scene soon changes to other images showing the traces of colonialism left in many African places. Goran Olsson’s Concerning Violence, based on Frantz Fanon’s book ‘The Wretched of the Earth’ written by Frantz Fanon, is a found footage-style documentary in support of Swedish TV archive. Bricolage of various footages like reportage clips, home movies and newsreel invites the viewer to a new level of documentary. Images of postcolonial Africa, voice of hip-hop artist Lauryn Hill narrating Fanon’s lines and written texts on the screen are overdetermined in this unique audio-visual articulation. (Jin PARK)
