Program Note
What They Don’t Talk about When They Talk about Love is the second full feature film by Mouly Surya, who visited BIFF in 2008 with her debut film, Fiksi. This new film is a story about love and growing up in a school for blind girls. Diana, who suffers from excessive myopia, wants to become her classmate Andhika’s girlfriend, while Fitri falls in love with Edo, who is mute and works at the school. Love between Diana and Andhika, and Fitri and Edo is naturally different from that of other lovers. This is what makes this movie special. Mouly Surya‘s new and detailed perspective of love is expressed solely through sound, fragrance and gestures, and this manner of loving is something not seen in other love stories. It appears that Mouly Surya wanted to make us feel each moment Diana and Andhika, and Fitri and Edo falls in love through image and sound. Hence everyday sounds and images seem to hold completely different meaning in this film. (KIM Ji-Seok)
