Program Note
In the first feature of Laxman Utekar, after he cinematographed three independent films, the protagonist comes back to his hometown after a long time in order to participate in the funeral of the postman who was his childhood friend. This postman, being the only person who connected the village with outside cities, read letters to illiterate villagers and sometimes gave advice to them. But he often felt hurt and humiliated at the fact that he and his wife do not have a baby. While the film is focused on the fuss to retrieve a missing letter, the common life matters such as a teenagers’ first love and daily family lives are prominently depicted. With an aim to find a missing letter, the postman and his wife accompanied by the teenager Ranga visit a city and spend a pleasant time together watching a Charlie Chaplin movie, shopping, and taking pictures. What the old wife of the postman has been keeping for several decades reminds adult Ranga of his childhood memory. The life of the postman and his wife who endured pain and humiliation throughout their lives will resonate deep in the audience’s heart. The cinematographer-director offers in his long takes the beauty of villagers’ daily lives, the close-ups on their faces, and the river on the sunset. (PARK Inho)
