Program Note
Asserting the idea that minor conflicts can lead to death, <Your Time Is Up> is a bold drama of brothers and retaliation. The younger deadbeat squanders the money he manages to borrow from his brother, who is unhappy with the arrangement and expects the money to be repaid within a week. This demand leads the brothers as well as the audience to unexpected tragedies that intensify to an unpredictable point of collapse. The drama begins like a variation on the Cain and Abel story; the mixture of fate and chance in the dramaturgy and the rather oratorical title recall Greek tragedies. It is no small pleasure to follow the highly dramatic narrative. Maturity is evident in this young director’s elaborate plot as is experienced in the rhythms of story. Choi Won-young, better known for TV, is a revelation as the elder brother as are several of the novice performers. All the elements complete the film, which could have easily turned into a drama of cliches. Another strong entry, after Bleak Night, from the Korean Academy of Film Arts. (JEON Chanil)
