Program Note
Between 1946 and 1954, over 60,000 soldiers from Sub-Saharan Africa were mobilized in the colonial war in Asia as part of the French army. Contrary to the hopes of the French forces, however, they uickly became close to the local Vietnamese. The African soldiers saw themselves reflected in the lives and values of the local farmers and families, which led to an upsurge in marriages with Vietnamese women. When the war came to an end in 1954, many African soldiers wanted to return home with their families, but the French army refused to allow them to bring their wives with them. [Indochina, Traces of a Mother] is an affecting documentary about the Afro-Vietnamese children born during the Indochina War. It revolves around the testimony of Christophe, an African-Vietnamese man adopted by an African officer who was invalided home. A profound film revealing a hidden facet of colonial warfare.
