Program Note
2011 AND Busan Bank Fund On March 11, 2011, an earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale hit Japan. After the catastrophic earthquake, the effects of the subsequent tsunami and nuclear meltdowns that shook Japan are still being felt. The after-effects are continuing. The camera delves into the ruins of the earthquake and contamination area, where radioactivity levels are increasing at frightening pace. [311] refuses to show sensational scenes of disaster like the tsunami wave itself and buildings collapsing, which led thedisaster coverage on the news right after the tragedy. [311] was born of the filmmakers’ heavy hearts on their way to the site of the disaster and chronicles the work of the restoration and rescue teams that were confronted full on by the grief. From innocent smiling children to a barber who cuts hair for people at the refugee camp, [311] records the hope lurking amid life in ruins with a calm voice. The catastrophic earthquake can be part of life, not just news. (CHO Young-jung)
