Program Note
The sea and a mirror are what sustain the life of 12 year old Kapis, who lives on the small Indonesian island of Kampung Bajo. The mirror is a gift left by her father who was lost at sea, and the sea is where she and her mother make their living. According to Bajo culture, the mirror symbolizes something that can help recover a lost object or person. Kapis too looks upon the mirror her father left and believes he will return. But to her mother, firmly rooted in reality, the mirror is only a tool for applying makeup. When her mother breaks the mirror and falls for young Tudo, visiting the Bajo Island for dolphin research, Kapis despairs. Then she steals the island mirror. However, Kapis must learn to overcome her sadness on her own. To her, the sea is her father’s home, and the sea is a great mirror. First time director Kamila Andini paints a wonderfully detailed portrait of the pain and hope that Kapis feels. It is truly a captivating movie about growing up. (KIM Ji-seok)
