Program Note
This is a film of outstanding film techniques with a bumpy and windy island in the North Pole as the backdrop. It is an existentialist drama about survival that bravely deals with moral issues. Pavel, a recent college graduate, Pavel, spends a summer in a now abandoned, but once important strategic meteorological station. His companion, silent and gruff Sergei, is constantly taken aback by his carelessness and energy. When Sergei leaves his post to go fishing for trout one day, Pavel receives terrible news about Sergei’s family but misses his chance to share the distressing news with Sergei. Pavel’s well-meaning lie ultimately causes tension between the two. The thick fog, the pointed rocks, the breaking waves, and the wind that blows at breakneck speed all attest to Pavel Kostomarov’s amazing shooting techniques. The two actors who play the main characters were jointly awarded the best actor award in the Berlin Film Festival. (Jay JEON)
