Program Note
Yeon who was suffering from infidelity of her husband, sees CHANG Chen sentenced a death penalty on the TV news and heads to the prison. Under the observation of the warden their relationship deepens as time goes by. Yeon gives him the Four Seasons as a present. Their abrupt meeting is an exaggeration that is a characteristic of KIM Ki-duk’s films such as Bad Guy. Breath develops its plot following the happiness and despair of main characters since the encounter of the two. In particular, gestures and performances by characters in closed space like prison became explicit nature of KIM Ki-duk’s films. Yeon’s performance of the Four Seasons is taken over by her husband and her daughter’s out-staring game, then they sing a song, Tombe la neige, together in the car on the way home as a reconciliation. This song also features on the scene where CHANG Chen and his jail mates movement like modern dance. Extreme emotions and gestures of characters are the director’s sedition to breathe in the world that imprisons us. (LEE Sang-yong)
