For those audiences that remember Mohsen Makhmalbaf′s Kandahar, Return to Kandahar will be even more interesting. Nelofer Pażira, the documentary producer and Canadian journalist is the leading actress of Kandahar and she leads her second journey to Afghanistan to tell the story that was based on her own life. Of course, the two stories intertwine and continue together. If there were one difference this time though, it would be that while Kandahar is about finding the younger sister who tries to commit suicide, Return to Kandahar is similar to a documentary about finding an old childhood friend. Is seeing Afghanistan in ruins again something that the audience is tired of? Returning to her old house, the old streets, the old movie theater, she repeats that everything is" unfamiliar, it′s so strange". The frequent war and terror in the impoverished land had taken away the little hope that was left for them. This personal and political documentary states, again, that repeating the tale of Afghanistan is never too much.(Kang So-won)
