Program Note
Through Pickpocket you can get a glimpse at yet another aspect of Sri lankan cinema. His pregnant wife always psychologically isolates professional pickpocket Kamal. She feels embarrassed by her husband’s profession. Even if he tries to get another job, Kamal has neither the talent nor will to do so. One day Kamal finds a picture of his wife inside a wallet that he stole. Kamal becomes suspicious of his wife, and in his confusion he goes out to look for the owner of the wallet. Director Linton Semage focuses on the insecurities of the characters and their vulnerable relationship. While doing so, the director does not miss the antagonistic air surrounding the world that the characters live in. When Kamal roams the city in search of the owner of the wallet, the surroundings seem hostile to this helpless, jealousy-ridden man. By simultaneously showing the inner feelings of the characters and the external world around them, an already interesting film has become even more fascinating. (Kim Young-jin)
