Program Note
If you want an effective love story or wish to experience contemporary India, then watch this film. One day, Mrs. Meenakshi Iyer, who is holding a newborn baby, gets on the bus. On the same bus is Raja Chowdhury, a photographer. But the bus, which is packed full of people, is unable to reach its destination because of a riot. This riot caused by conflicts between Muslims and Hindus has gotten so out of hand that even the police can’t do anything about it. A group of Hindus raid the bus and start killing all Muslim couples. Mrs. Iyer is safe from the killings, for she is a Hindu. But Raja is not as he is a Muslim. Perhaps through compassion, Iyer tells the killers that Raja is her husband. The adventures of this ‘odd couple’ start from here. In a contemporary India, where religious conflict brings about revenge after revenge, a man and a woman who are not supposed to be, has become ‘one.’ Then is Mr. and Mrs. Iyer an Indian ‘Romeo and Juliet’? If there are any similarities between the literary classic and the contemporary Indian film, it is perhaps the vivid portrayal of even the peripheral characters. It is not difficult to see that the various characters stuck inside the bus represent the diversity of India today. Religious conflicts that seemed to have a solid foundation all crumble before the diversity and the possible understanding between men and women. The Iyers now have a story that they will forever cherish and the audience will now get to see the scenery and people of India unfold before their eyes. A stroke of good luck awaits both the Iyers and the audience. (Kwon Yong-min)
