Program Note
Zhang Yuan, who has been ceaselessly portraying the everyday occurrences of modern Chinese society, is a director who strives for a ‘spectacle of destruction’. Through the lens of director Zhang Yuan, a surprisingly active energy bursts out from the seemingly boring lives of ordinary men. Similar to Sons, I Love You once again reminds us how cynical yet unique Zhang’s vision is. When Ju and Yi first meet, Ju is about to marry Yi’s friend. That night, the three characters all enjoy themselves at a swimming pool. But Yi’s fiance dies after diving into a waterless pool. After the freak accident the reunited Yi and Ju fall in love and get married. But their married life is full of troubles. Yi wants to be free and Ju always wants Yi to prove his unrequited love for her. Their bitter married life is filled with constant bickering and daily slanders. I Love You objectively explores a tragedy that can start from trivial talk and actions. The psychological anxiety of the characters that results can sometimes be suffocating. (Kim Young-jin)
